This quote is by Mark Twain (1835–1910), one of America’s greatest writers and thinkers. Twain was a sharp observer of human nature and a lifelong skeptic of self-deception. Throughout his life and writings, he repeatedly mocked humanity’s remarkable ability to believe comforting lies — especially the ones we tell ourselves. He saw self-deception as the root of many social ills, from hypocrisy and religious dogma to political manipulation and personal failure. I felt these words were particularly fitting for a tensegrity candlestick, which appears to float in defiance of gravity!
